Why see a postpartum chiropractor?

Having a baby is one of the most physically demanding things a human body can ever do. Whether you delivered vaginally or via cesarean, your body has just been through something significant, and the postpartum period is not just about survival. It needs to be about recovering and rebuilding, too. A lot of postpartum care conversations focus on the baby, but what happens to your body during and after pregnancy and delivery deserves a lot more attention than it typically gets.

During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called relaxin that loosens the ligaments in your pelvis to prepare for birth. This is necessary and a brilliant design for birth, but it also means your pelvis, sacrum, and surrounding structures are highly mobile and vulnerable to misalignment during the delivery process. Add in the physical demands of pushing, positioning, epidurals, or a surgical birth, and it becomes clear why so many women experience lingering pain, instability, and dysfunction in the months after delivery.

Common postpartum complaints I see include low back pain, pelvic pain and instability, hip pain, neck and upper back tension from nursing and carrying baby, headaches, and fatigue that goes beyond normal new-mom tired. Most women are told this is just “normal” when having a baby. I disagree, which is why I offer the following during postpartum appointments:

At Altalign Wellness, chiropractic adjustments address misalignments in the spine and pelvis that developed during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. Restoring proper alignment takes pressure off the nervous system and helps your body function the way it is designed to. Soft tissue work addresses the muscles, fascia, and connective tissue that have been stretched, strained, or compensating for months. This is an often overlooked piece of postpartum recovery that makes a significant difference in how you feel day to day.

Quantum Neurology, or QN, is one of my favorite tools for postpartum care specifically because of how effectively it squares the pelvis. Many postpartum women have a pelvis that is rotated or uneven without ever knowing it. This can contribute to hip pain, back pain, and dysfunction that lingers for months or even years if left unaddressed.

Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is something I include in postpartum care because birth and motherhood is not just a physical experience. It can be joyful, traumatic, unexpected, beautiful, and overwhelming all at once. Unresolved stress demands of new motherhood can get stuck in the nervous system and show up as physical symptoms or emotional dysregulation. NET helps identify and gently release those patterns so your nervous system can reset.

I also use my Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) training to offer functional lab analysis and nutrition education. Postpartum is a time of significant hormonal shifts, nutrient depletion, and metabolic change. Your body just grew and delivered a human being, and it needs real nutritional support to recover. We look at what you are eating, what you may be missing, and how to support your healing through food and targeted supplementation.

At Altalign Wellness, newborn adjustments are also complimentary with mom's appointment for the first 6 months. The birth process is physically demanding for baby too, and a gentle newborn adjustment can support their nervous system as they settle into the world. It is one small way we can care for your whole family during this season.

If you are postpartum and not feeling like yourself, you do not have to just push through it. You just did one of the hardest things a human body can do. My goal is to give you the care that matches that.
