Why is it important to have a holistic chiropractor?
I was recently at PT for the pubic symphysis dysfunction that has been residual from pregnancy when I got a very personal reminder. I had terrible pain in my right SI joint and literally could not get up off of the table. I texted my chiropractor friend, Dr. Brooke, and arranged to trade adjustments with her ASAP.
Dr. Brooke and I have taken the same prenatal chiropractic training that dives deep into all of the bones, ligaments, and muscles of the pelvis. She performed a thorough exam on me and decided to adjust my left SI joint.
I was skeptical. My pain was on the right, and 99% of the time it is my right SI joint that needs attention. But I was in no position to argue—I could barely move.
She adjusted my SI joint on the left, my tailbone on the right, and worked extensively with the muscles and ligaments of my pelvis. Even as a chiropractor myself, I doubted how much one session could help given the level of pain and dysfunction I was in. By that evening, though, I was walking, exercising, and bending over completely pain-free.
So what are the takeaways?
Chiropractors that treat the body from a holistic perspective are essential. It would have been so easy for her to adjust my right SI joint simply because that’s where the pain was and where I’m usually adjusted. But that likely would have made things worse.
I only improved because she took the time to assess and correct the bones, ligaments, and joints of my entire pelvis and low back.
Sometimes the adjustment that helps the most isn’t where the pain is. Patients are often confused when I adjust a different level or the opposite side of where it hurts most. Yesterday, I was that patient too.
Holistic chiropractic care treats your whole system instead of just chasing symptoms. We don’t just relieve pain in the moment. We want to restore balance so the body can truly heal and function better long-term
